Reviews: O.K. we're gonna review it as it plays, so hang on, here we gooooo!!! Red Cross: "Rich Brat" Yeah sounds like someone I know, dumb lyrics, Greg Hetson, Ron Reyes, sped up Lurkers, old sound, old chord punk progressions. Decent. Descendents: "I Wanna be a Bear" How could you not like it? Follow the lyrics, fast, makes me wanna steal a picnic basket, WAAAAH! Anti: Two songs, standard punk rock, "Fight war not wars", can't argue with that logic. Ill Will: "Paranoid" Not the Ozzy tune, one of those "hey, I'm weird" songs, it's fast, nothing to write home about, good drummer. "Midnite Deposit"-"she runs after real big dicks", herpes rules! OOPS! Gotta cut it short from now on... Civil Dismay: Drummer sucks, ambient punk rock. China White: I've written this song before... boring, yahhh, who cares. Mood of Defiance: California Über Alles" rip with your little sister sining... a "weird" guitar break. Minutemen: "Shit You Hear at Parties", "Maternal Rite" It's the Minutemen, I like it, what's there to say? 100 Flowers: Usta be the Urinals, fuck it, the singer is a rodhead. Urinals: Now they're the 100 Flowers... best of the side, short, to the point, shitty recording... what happened to them? Zurich 1916: "Children's Song" They took Eno the wrong way, funeral drone... I hated this kinda shit when I was a kid and I don't know it now... Plebs: "Payday" Saxes, a dick singer, no bass, drums, must be friends of the guys who put this out, Tony Bennett should sing it. Saccharine Trust: "Disillusion Fool" Singer is like a pissed off scientist whoe assistant not only disagrees with his theories, but dropped the beaker containing Mrs. Hagstom's vital fluids too. Punk rock with off kilter ending. Hey, buy it, I did. -B. Toff (from Oops! #5, Fall 1982) Another great compilation out of Los Angeles. Side one brings us the hard-edged side of some current SoCal bands, with Red Cross and the Descendents leading the way. Side two has a lot of different styles with new tracks by the Minutemen, 100 Flowers, Saccharine Trust, Pleibs, and an old Urinals gem dug out of the vaults, a track that makes Jumpin' Jeff shed a tear for the old band. This is one to pick up. -John Silva (from Maximum Rock'n'Roll #2, September/October 1982) |
